Roller Skating Scholarships

Roller skating scholarships are available for individuals who are interested in the sport of skate and there are several. Educational scholarships are available through the U.S. Foundation of Amateur Roller Skating along with the National Governing Body of Roller Skating and USA Roller Sports. These skating scholarships are designed to assist in defraying the cost for an athlete while also encouraging their formal education as they prepare to attain life-long career goals. Grants are paid directly the winning individual to assist with education tuition costs, textbooks, lab fees and/or room and boarding. In order to qualify, the educational institution must be an accredited university or college or trade or technical school.

Requirements for Roller Skating Scholarships

High school seniors and college undergraduates may also wish to consider applying for roller skate scholarships offered by the Roller Skating foundation. This foundation offers two different types of athletic scholarships. One award is given to a high school senior with plans to attend college in the coming fall. The other scholarship is awarded to a current college senior who is majoring in hotel or food and beverage management or sports. Applications must be received by April 4th. Under the current student category, the selected winner will receive a skating scholarship award of $4,000. Eligible applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.4 as well as a composite SAT/ACT score that places them in at least the 85th percentile. The selected winner will further be an individual who most exceeds Roller Skating Foundation Board of Directors performance measurement criteria. Applicants will need to be certified by a RSA member skating center owner or operator who can verify the applicant has visited their facility from time to time as a skating customer.

Under the college student category, the award winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their Core or Major Concentration. Applicants must also demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities as well as exceeding performance measurement criteria.

Other Scholarships for Roller Skating

Other roller skating scholarships include the Wayne Wojnarowsky scholarship. Wayne Wojnarowsky was killed in a car accident in the fall of 1999. Wayne was not only a skater but also a coach, club official, parent and a member of the USARS Board of Directors. This skating scholarship has been established in his memory and is endowed by his family to provide a perpetual athletic scholarship of $1,000 per year. The skate scholarship is awarded annual to National Champions in the Junior World Class Figures. The skating scholarship alternates each year between male and female winners.

The winning Champion will also need to further qualify by having a minimum GPA of 3.0 from their prior school year. Scholarship funds are payable to the winner’s educational institution and will help to cover tuition fees as well as other educational expenses.

Michigan Roller Skate Scholarships

If you live in Michigan and you are a competitive roller skater, you might also wish to apply for special roller skating scholarships in that state as well. The Michigan Competitive Roller Skaters scholarship is designed to identify, honor and assist competitive roller skaters by helping them to obtain a higher level of education. The MUSA/RS scholarship committee determines the amount of two equivalent athletic scholarships. The skating scholarships are also known as the Fred and Marge Messenger Artistic Scholarship and the Dick Heath Speed Scholarship Award. The maximum amount available is $1,000 per annual award. The scholarships are paid directly to the educational institution in which the award winner is enrolled. These athlete scholarships are not renewable.

Eligible recipients must be enrolled in an accredited trade school or college as a full-time student by the beginning of the fall or winter term of the coming academic year. Applicants must have participated as a Michigan Competitive Roller Skater for at least two consecutive years. All eligible applicants for this skate scholarship program must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 for the past two years.

Snowboarding and skiing scholarships are relatively few and far between. The National Collegiate Athletic Association does give out some ski scholarships.
